Shunryu Suzuki (1904–1971) was a Japanese Sōtō Zen monk who significantly contributed to the spread of Zen Buddhism in the United States. He founded the San Francisco Zen Center and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen Buddhist monastery outside Asia. His 1970 book, "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," is a compilation of his teachings, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an open and receptive mindset in Zen practice.
